About Plein Air Painting
Plein Air Painting is a UK-based resource helping artists at every level get outside and paint with confidence.
There's a particular kind of satisfaction that comes from setting up outdoors and painting what's actually in front of you. The light, the wind, the slightly awkward angle you've chosen because the view was too good to resist. This site exists because getting started with plein air painting, or getting better at it, can feel harder than it should. There's a lot of general art advice out there, but not much that speaks directly to what it's actually like to paint outside in Britain.
So that's what we set out to fix. Plein Air Painting is built around the specific realities of outdoor painting in the UK: the weather that changes its mind three times in an hour, the landscapes that genuinely reward getting out into them, the gear decisions that matter when you're carrying everything yourself. Whether you've never painted outdoors before or you've been doing it for years and want to push your practice further, there's something here for you.
You'll find practical guidance on technique, honest assessments of equipment, and location ideas from across the UK. Some of it is aimed squarely at beginners finding their feet; some of it goes deeper into specific challenges like mixing colour in changing light or painting through winter. It's not a catalogue, just the kind of content we'd have wanted to find when we were figuring this out ourselves.
Every piece of content on the site goes through research, writing, and editorial review before it's published. We take accuracy seriously, update things when they need updating, and try to be honest even when the honest answer is 'it depends' or 'this product has real limitations'.
The site earns money through affiliate links. When you click through to a product and buy it, we may receive a small commission from the retailer. It doesn't cost you anything extra, and it doesn't change what we cover or how we assess things. We'd tell you the same things either way.
If you've got a question, spotted something that needs correcting, or just want to say hello, we'd genuinely like to hear from you. Write to us at hello@pleinairpainting.co.uk.
